However, a couple soft goals that snuck through the legs of Darcy Kuemper provided the difference in a 4-1 Maple Leafs win.
The Wild (3-2-2) took more than five times as many shots on goal as the Maple Leafs in the first period, but trailed 2-1.
The Maple Leafs (6-1-0) scored on a tic-tac-toe passing play from Cody Franson to Dave Bolland to Tyler Bozak on the backdoor. It was the team's first shot on goal four minutes and 24 seconds into the game.
Trevor Smith gave the Maple Leafs a 2-0 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first period by cleanly beating Kuemper between the legs with a soft shot from the face off circle to the goaltender's right.
Jason Pominville scored his third power play goal of the season, second in as many games, late in the first period to get the Wild within a goal before Raymond's goaltender-changing tally.
Mason Raymond chased Kuemper at the 12:23 mark of the second period with an in-tight shot that got through the goaltender's legs.
Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer stopped 37 of 38 shots, but the best scoring chances the Wild provided were shot wide or off the post.
The Wild return to action Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
