There are reasons to change things. But dropping the Top 106.7 Songs in favor of a top 50 doesn't seem like a good idea. A top 50 songs may be shorter, but it's almost as generic as the American Top 40 radio show which pushes out generic pop songs all of America is supposedly listening to.
The so-called alternative station isn't really presenting alternatives when all the nation is listening to Foo Fighters who appeared on the 2012 Grammys, FUN who is being played to death by nearly every station, Gotye featuring Kimbra ("Somebody I Used To Know") who just might go down as a one hit wonder, Muse who is prominently featured on the soundtrack of "Twilight", and Coldplay joined forces with pop princess Rihanna for their big hit "Paradise. Muse doesn't even sound all that alternative anymore with their new bluesy/r & b sound on "Madness".
Some of the acts which KROQ is finally acknowledging and playing on this top 50 have been sweating it out for years with no interest from the radio station that once prided itself on playing 80% new music. These acts include Matt & Kim, M83, and even Muse spent many years with hardly a blip of airplay. While bands like Grouplove are new, they are also supported by major labels.
Meanwhile, other bands are so overplayed that they have two songs on the list - Grouplove, Fun, Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Green Day, Rise Against, The Killers, and Linkin Park. This means 16 spots on a "Top 50" were taken up by 8 bands. That's enough to make many not even want to listen.
When former fans of KROQ decry such repetition, they do not wish for a return to the music of the past. Former wish for more new music from independent labels rather than this tightly controlled major label playlist. Rather than consider it "much ado about nothing," a nearly frozen playlist as music changed in the early 90s was part of what killed KMET.
So, without further ado, here is the list:
