On January 24, the much anticipated Kroger Marketplace celebrated its Grand Opening in Forney. Approximately 100 people waited in line for the doors to open, but the first customer was Janell Lapp. She won a Forney EDC contest and received a $100 gift card and 30 minutes in the store before the crowd was let in.

Within an hour of opening, the store was packed full of smiling customers eager to take advantage of special sales and to celebrate the opening. Due to the cold temperatures outside, the official ribbon cutting ceremony was held inside near the pharmacy. The ceremony was kicked off by the Forney High School Drumline, marching and playing through the store. The National Anthem was then sung by the North Forney High School Chamber Choir.

Kroger dignitaries as well as Forney Mayor Darren Rozell spoke to the onlookers and shared their mutual excitement at bringing the 124,000 Kroger Marketplace to Forney. The Mayor and members of the City Council joined with Kroger Manager John Pierce to cut the red ribbon and officially mark the opening of the store.

Mayor Rozell told the Forney News Examiner, “Once the store opened and Forney began shopping in their new Marketplace, the excitement spread throughout the building. Kroger deciding to bring their Marketplace concept to Forney, and employing over 300 people, will have a noticeable impact on our local economy.”
