Kristen Stewart is rumored to be receiving a custom-designed black diamond engagement ring from Robert Pattinson for New Year’s Eve. Articles on Dec. 30 by The Stir and Gather.com suggest that this would be the perfect time for Rob to present Kristen with this unique symbol of his love as they ring in the New Year together on the Isle of Wight.
According to a Dec. 30 news report from MSN Entertainment, Kat von D has already received her custom-designed black diamond engagement ring from fiancé Deadmau5.
But will these black diamond rings mean good luck or bad luck for Kristen Stewart and Kat von D?
It all depends.
Good Luck or Bad Depending on the Culture
What’s interesting about black diamonds is that in different cultures, they mean completely different things.
They could symbolize good luck or bad.
In India, black diamonds represent bad luck.
According to the myth, black diamonds are considered to be cursed, and symbolic of death. The basis of this myth is that black diamonds were thought to resemble the eyes of snakes and spiders, and were believed to be dedicated to Yama, the god of death.
However, in Italy, black diamonds have a much more positive connotation. Called the “stone of reconciliation,” black diamonds are believed to bring good luck. According to the myth, couples in troubled relationships could save their marriage just by touching a black diamond. It was believed that the couple’s troubles would leave them and enter the stone.
So what kind of luck can Kristen Stewart and Kat von D expect from their black diamond engagement rings?
The design of their individual rings may give us (and them) a clue as to what to expect.
Kristen Stewart’s Black Diamond Engagement Ring from Robert Pattinson
Robert Pattinson was rumored to be designing a special engagement ring for Kristen Stewart featuring a combination of black diamonds and rubies.
Legend has it that the ruby is a symbol of everlasting love. In addition to health, wealth and wisdom, it was thought that the wearer of a ruby would be blessed with outstanding success in affairs of the heart. Rubies were also thought to have the power to reconcile lover’s quarrels.
If the rumors are true about Rob designing an engagement ring for Kristen with black diamonds and rubies, we can see why he chose that particular combination of stones
Given Kristen’s affair with Rupert Sanders, and the struggles Rob and Kristen have been having with their reconciliation, apparently Rob thought rubies and black diamonds might help get their relationship back on track.
Kat von D’s Black Diamond Engagement Ring from Deadmau5
Kat von D’s fiancé, Deadmau5 (real name, Joel Zimmerman) custom-designed a unique engagement ring for her that most women would be reluctant to accept.
Given the unusual design, one can’t help but wonder if Deadmau5 considered the symbolism behind Kat’s ring.
The one-of-a-kind ring features a large black diamond set in the middle of a double band of smaller black diamonds. The large diamond in the middle is flanked by two small silver skulls on each side.
Though Kat von D seems very pleased with her gothic-inspired engagement ring, clearly the design Deadmau5 came up with embodies all the negative myths that surround black diamonds.
We hope that’s not a sign of things to come.

So will those black diamond engagement rings bring good luck or bad for Kristen Stewart and Kat von D?
Those who subscribe to the myths above about black diamonds would probably conclude that Kristen Stewart’s ring from Robert Pattinson ( if she gets it on New year’s Eve as rumored) will mean good luck for their relationship in 2013.
Whereas Kat von D’s black diamond and skull ring from Deadmau5 could be a sign of impending doom.
