What started as a bet between 10 friends has turned into one of the area’s most unique sporting events. The North Carolina State University students organize this charity race for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, last year they raised over $122,000 dollars for this excellent cause. This year they are expecting to reach their maximum capacity of 7,700 participants. This is their eighth annual event.
The race is simple; the runners must run from the North Carolina State bell tower to the Peace Street Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop. Eat one dozen doughnuts and return to the bell tower in under one hour. The race may be simple but how about all those doughnuts.
Here are some facts from the Krispy Kreme Challenge web site.
- If all the doughnuts were stacked, they would reach 10,500 feet or taller than the world’s tallest building Burj Kalifa
- The energy consumed on that day would power a 60-watt light bulb for 44.5 years or a house for 13.5 years.
- If the doughnut boxes were stacked, they would be 420 stories or 4 times the height of the Empire State Building.
- Collectively over half a ton of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is to be consumed by the participants.
- The glazed doughnuts are approximately 2400 calories
Calories for a good cause if all 7700 eat a dozen doughnuts (92,400) at 2400 calories each that would come to a whopping, wait for it, yes 18,480,000 calories. Hold on to your seats all you diet conscious individuals, there is a healthy angle to all this. The participants will be running before and after they eat. According to Runner’s World the average person uses about 110 calories per mile, so for this race each contestant will burn approximately 550 calories or 4,235,000 for all contestants. Therefore, you can see that is a net intake of a mere 14,245,000 calories or 1850 calories per person. That can bring on a sugar coma!
So come out and support a good cause to benefit the North Carolina Children’s Hospital; this Saturday, February 4th at 8:30 a.m. The race starts at the bell tower. Be there to support a great cause in any way you can.
