Health activist, actress, author, and former Bud girl Kris Carr is known for her positive attitude and her self-designation as a "cancer thriver." Diagnosed with hemangioendothelioma on Valentine's Day in 2003, Carr has spent the past decade living and promoting better health through diet, exercise, and other lifestyle interventions. In order to bring these positive changes to the public, Carr has designated September as "prevention month" -- or, in her inimitable lingo, "Crazy Sexy Prevention Month."
Carr defines "crazy" as "out-of-the-box, forward-thinking" and "sexy" as "empowered." Although her cancer diagnosis was the turning point for her adoption of positive lifestyle changes, the health activist asserts that changing one's lifestyle for the better is "about all preventable chronic" diseases. Indeed, research has repeatedly shown that lifestyle changes such as the Mediterranean diet and regular exercise lower one's risk for developing the chronic diseases that plague so many Americans.
Carr boldly asserts that "it's our job to give prevention a make-over," aiming to "take it from boring or threatening to inspiring or empowering." Her website provides ten "ultimate expert prevention tips," including warnings about staying safe in the sun from Ken Cook of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and advice on setting a positive tone from Louise Hay of Hay House. Although Carr's sources are figures who are popular in the media, it is not difficult to find evidence for each piece of advice with a quick search of PubMed (the US National Library of Medicine, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health). For example, Ken Cook's sunscreen tip is backed up, in part, by this research; Louise Hay's remark about the importance of a positive attitude has been shown to be true time and time again.
There are some factors over which one has little or no control, but there are far more choices for which one is virtually entirely responsible. Here's to a strong end to Crazy Sexy Prevention Month, and a strong beginning to a healthy life!
