Kringles converge on famous Indiana town

Though the calendar might read that the month is April dear old Santa Claus is making a special trip to “America’s Christmas Hometown” this week. Actually, there are over 700 jolly gents traveling to Santa Claus, Indiana, along with their wives and other Christmas folk. The occasion is the 2nd Annual Jim Yellig Santa Claus Workshop being held April 19-21, 2012.

Named for the late Santa Jim Yellig (known as the “Real Santa from Santa Claus, Indiana”) the workshop will feature many different elements for its attendees to enjoy. Included are many different programs and presentations, a vendor’s show, a film festival, and a program honoring the inductees of the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame. Mrs. Claus will also have her special program as well. Other interesting items include a Santa car show and a basketball scrimmage between the “North Pole Nicks” and the “Harlem Wizards” (auxiliary of the Globetrotters).

The Jim Yellig Santa Claus Workshop is already proving to be unlike any other event of its kind. With the number of attendants confirmed, the workshop will prove to be the largest gathering of Clauses in North America.

Santa Claus town businesses are participating in making the workshop a community affair rather than a convention. “We are looking forward to hosting the workshop here in Santa Claus,” said Ron Smith, town council president. “Our community is the perfect location for such a magical event.” Considering the history that surrounds the town this statement could be no more correct. Local businesses participating include the Heritage Hills School Band Boosters, Santa Claus Christmas Store, Santa’s Candy Castle, and Santa’s Lodge – where most attendees will be staying.

The greatest surprise that really sets this event apart and baffles many is the fact that it is absolutely free to attend. Everything has been paid for by private sponsors and by partners of the workshop. This gives the many Old Saint Nicks a monetary break.

The workshop, created and produced by Phillip L. Wenz and the Santa Claus Oath Foundation, is being filmed for the upcoming Santa documentary, They Wore the Red Suit. Many different Santa organizations will be taking part, including the Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santas, Inc., the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, Santa America, the Clan Claus Society, and the Palm Tree Santas Drill Team to name a few.
