Krazy Downhill Derby marred by accident

The 36th annual Krazy Downhill Derby was cut short this Saturday, February 25, when the sled piloted by Boy Scouts from Stony Creek Troop 22 careened off course and ran into a wooden rope-tow post.  The homemade sled, named “Tha Bomb”, similar in design to a bobsled, ran fourth in a field of eleven.

The Krazy Downhill Derby is an annual event at Dynamite Hill in Chestertown. Sponsored by the North Warren Chamber of Commerce, the derby features home-made, non-motorized sleds that compete for prizes. Past years have seen as many as two dozen entrants.

The slopes at Dynamite Hill had a good base of man-made snow for the event, topped off by a fresh dusting Friday evening.

North Warren EMS was on stand-by for the derby and attended to the riders of the wayward sled with assistance from the Warrensburg Emergency Squad.  Two Ambulances transported the injured off site. Their condition is unknown at this time. All four boys were wearing helmets.

Lynn Engelmann of the Chamber of Commerce said this was the first accident she’s seen in the nine years she has been involved with the derby. Organizers decided to end the derby early and awarded prizes to the entrants.
