Kraft recalls 1.2 million cases of cottage cheese due to spoilage risk

Hold on before you have fruit and cottage cheese for breakfast or lunch, there's a recall you need to know about.

Kraft Foods Group is recalling 1.2 million cases of several brands of cottage cheese because they have been stored improperly and might cause illness.

Affected products include certain Knudsen Cottage Cheese, Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese, Simply Kraft Cottage Cheese and Daily Chef Cottage Cheese products, Kraft said in a statement Saturday.

The products in question all have code dates from May 9, 2014 through July 23, 2014. They were distributed throughout the United States.

Consumers can find the code date on the bottom of the cup or the top of the package. Simply Kraft products with a plant code of 36-2158 on the cups or a "W" in the case code (e.g., "W 21 JUL 2014") are not affected. Simply Kraft products subject to the recall are only those with a plant code of 06-245 on the bottom of the cup and case code date without any "W" (e.g., "21 JUL 2014").

No other Knudsen, Breakstone’s, Simply Kraft or Daily Chef products are included in the recall.

Do not eat these products. Return them to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund. Or contact Kraft Foods Consumer Relations at 1-800-396-6307 between 9 a.m. Eastern Time and 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

According to HomeFoodSafety.org cheese should be stored the following ways:

Hard cheese, like cheddar, gouda, Edam, and Swiss, can last for 3 to 4 weeks tightly wrapped in the refrigerator after opening. It's okay to freeze hard cheese, but the texture and taste may suffer.
Remove mold from cheese by cutting a one-inch square around it; the rest is safe to eat.
Processed cheese spread can keep for 3 to 4 weeks in the refrigerator after being opened.
Pregnant women, young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems should not eat unpasteurized cheeses or soft cheeses like Camembert, Brie, blue-veined, etc.
The softer the cheese, the shorter the shelf life:
Cream cheese can last for 2 weeks
Cottage cheese can last for 10 to 30 days
Ricotta cheese can last for 5 days

Cheeses must be stored at a temperature of 30-40 degrees.
