Kosher Social Media ? Again ? Yes ! Oy Gevult !
For those of us (not disregarding the traditions of our ancestors) that tend to buck the system, an online Synagogue may be the answer for you. I wrote an article in 2011 entitled “Kosher Social Media; High Holidays online”, which detailed the first ever live online broadcast of High Holiday (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur aka Jewish New Year and day of Atonement) services.
This year, in due in part to the success of previous broadcasts, they will have the same live stream. This means, you can hear the warm sounds of the shofar as the Rabbi chants Tikya, Tikya Gadola and so on. You can hear the thought provoking sermons and the prayers for atonement, as you hope for inscription in the book of life for another year. You can do it all in the comforts of your own home or anywhere there is an internet connection.
In speaking to Lena L of Houston Texas whose own congregation is conservative, she admitted that her Rabbi and fellow congregants see this as a “hot topic”, and have debated it recently. She went on to satate, “The closest my synagogue has gotten to online streaming, is that they installed a large projection TV in the social room of the temple so those that step out during the service can watch and listen while they are away from the sanctuary.”
The services will be live-streamed at; www.Facebook.com/OurJewishCommunity in addition to at www.OurJewishCommunity.org with Facebook and Twitter chats. Mobile devices can access the live services at www.MobileJudaism.com or through the Livestream app for iPhones. All services are streamed from Congregation Beth Adom, a Cincinnati area synagogue.

OurJewishCommunity.org also streams a weekly Shabbat service and offers several other features: blogs, podcasts, video-casts, educational materials, holiday cards, access to rabbis, recipes, conversations, and more. Many people see OurJewishCommunity.org as their synagogue and Rabbis Barr and Baum as their rabbis.
