SXSW is in full swing in Austin and this year there are 15 Korean acts playing in the festival. On Sunday March 16 five of those bands will perform at Limelight as part of Korean Underground Vol 1. The bands scheduled to perform are Crying Nut, Jambinai, Smacksoft and Love X Stereo.

Crying Nut – (punk/rock) Korea’s first punk band and the best-selling Korean indie act of all time. They are considered the “godfathers” of Korea’s punk and indie scene.

Jambinai (post-rock/world music) They play post-rock with traditional Korean instruments and won “Best Crossover Album” at the 2013 Korean Music Awards. Aside from SXSW they are playing at other music festivals around the world.

Smacksoft – (post-rock) Band leader Bo Ryung Whang is one of Korea’s most respected female rock musicians. They were nominated for “Best Modern Rock Album” at the 2012 Korean Music Awards.

Big Phony – (indie folk) He is a Korean-American singer songwriter born and raised in the United States but now lives in Korea. He currently has two new albums out: “Bobby” and “Long Live the Lie.”

Love X Stereo – (electro rock) This band from Seoul toured the United States last year and played at CMJ in New York.

Q:Why are you excited to play in San Antonio on March 16?
A: Crying Nut’s accordion player / keyboard player Insoo Kim:
“We’ve never been to San Antonio before so it’s going to be fun to see the city and meet the people!”

Q: The San Antonio concert will feature 6 Korean bands -- Crying Nut, Jambinai, Idiotape, Whang Bo Ryung (Smacksoft), Rock 'N' Roll Radio, and Idiotape. Is this a good sampling of Korea's indie scene?
A:Jambinai’s guitarist and piri player Ilwoo Lee:

“All of the bands on Sunday’s night bill are really great. There are lots of other really good bands in Korea’s indie scene too. But since they can’t all make it here, this is a very good introduction for people to the Korean underground and should be a really cool night!”
Q:What can music fans expect from the March 16 Korean Underground Vol. 1 concert in San Antonio?
A: “For our performance, you can expect to see traditional Korean music mixed with rock music in a way that you’ve never heard before. We hope people really like the results.”

Q:What can music fans expect from the March 16 Korean Underground Vol. 1 concert in San Antonio?
A: Smacksoft guitarist/vocalist Bo Ryung Whang:
“Rock! Not all of the bands are rock ‘n’ roll acts, but everyone on the bill definitely has a rock ‘n’ roll attitude!”
