It is not Major League Baseball, but for fans that can't stand the wait for the Cactus Leage spring training games to start in Arizona, Korean baseball in the Valley is an acceptable substitute.
This year there there are two teams, the Kia Tigers and the Nexen Heros, that have chosen Surprise Stadium to hold their spring training games. The teams play against each other as well as other Korean teams that are using the Valley for their spring training as well.
On Wednesday, February 15th the Nexen Heros played host to the Doosan Bears. While the game that was played was basically the same as what americans are used to there were some subtle differences that made the experience at times almost comical.
The first difference that was actually quite easily spotted was the attendance for the game. At 20 minutes prior to game time there were 9 fans in the stands. There were actually more players and coaches wandering the stadium than spectators. By the first pitch, the crowd had ballooned up to around 30 people with other slowly filing through the gates as the game progressed.
As the players and coaches prepared themselves for the game there were definately some unique customs. While warming up, about a dozen players were playing pepper along the third base line. What was unique about this is that the batter was hitting the ball towards the crowd. Had there been many spectators in the crowd one of them could have taken a ball to the head, as there were more than a few balls that got away from their intended catcher and ended up in the seats. Also, it was unique to see that the photographers opperating the video cameras were simply players in uniform that took turns with this essential duty.
The next sight that was quite different was the appearance of the players. They were all wearing adjustable hats and the Bears were wearing Fila uniforms. Perhaps Fila is big in Korea but they are a rarity in MLB clubhouses. The team also wore helmets with the sticker of the team name, in addition to the logo along the side. Other than these differences, the players looked the same as most american players with earrings, jewelry, and Justin Bieber haicuts.
When it was time for the game to begin, it started. There was no national anthems, no ceremonial first pitch, nothing.
By far the most interesting sight to behold at this game was the number of players and coaches that were smoking. Upon entering the gates a group of about 6 Bears players were standing around sharing a drag and at least a half a dozen more players and/or coaches were seen lighting up around the stadium during the game.
The game itself was exciting. While the players lacked home run power and big league arms they did have a lot of energy. They all sprinted on and off the field between innings and were very vocal with chatter from the dugouts. There were two attempts to steal 3rd base in the first inning alone and a head first dive into the first base bag minutes later. While these players definately have heart and passion, it is obvious that is is just not the major leagues. However, if you are looking to watch a game for free and park for free and sit close to the players, than this is your place to be.
