There’s an old joke that you aren’t a true midwesterner if you haven’t run out in winter with a parka over a pair of shorts. You also aren’t a true Wisconsinite if you haven’t run out in a snowstorm for some frozen custard.
Frozen custard is a tradition in the Milwaukee area-- Leon’s, Culver’s, Gilles, and of course, Kopp’s draw visitors from all over the world (although not usually in frigid weather-- for that, you need to be a native.)
Most custards stands offer a variety of flavors every day, and so does Kopp’s, but they also have two special New Year’s flavors available only on December 30th and 31st, flavors so good that it's worth driving out in a snowstorm for them. At least, this year, it isn’t snowing; it’s just cold outside.
The two special New Year’s flavors are Chambord Alexander, an elegant mix of black raspberry and Creme de Cacao flavors, and Kahlua and Cream (made with coffee flavored Kahlua liqueur.
You can buy these flavors in cones, dishes, pints, quarts, and half gallons.(And of course, you can also buy chocolate and vanilla frozen custard as well.)
December 31st is also the last day to get an eggnog shake, if that’s your fancy.
Kopp’s is open until 9:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. There are three locations, 7631 West Layton Avenue in Greenfield, 18880 West Bluemound Road in Brookfield, and 5373 North Port Washington Road in Glendale. So pull on that parka over your shorts and run over-- Kopp’s only sells these two flavors once a year. Get ‘em while you can.
