Breast cancer survivors in Henrico and metro-Richmond will have to bear hearing about the funding fiasco with the Komen foundation for a while longer.
Vice-president for Public Policy for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, Karen Handel has submitted her letter of resignation, it was announced today.
In her letter, Handel told officials she supported the move to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, and fully acknowledged her involvement in the matter. She also said she felt that it was the best move for Komen's future and the women they serve.
Handel had been appointed to the position of Vice-president for Public Policy of Komen for the Cure after her loss of the Georgia gubernatorial primary to Congressman Nathan Deal in 2010.
Her position on abortions and dislike of Planned parenthood was know at the time of her being added to the payroll. A person with direct knowledge of policy-making at Komen Foundation's offices in Dallas, spoke on condition of anonymity.
The source said the grant-making criteria was written as a direct attempt to target Planned Parenthood. A memo was apparently distributed to foundation officials about this matter back in December.
The memo outlined Komen's wishes to distance themselves from a federal investigation that was ongoing against Planned Parenthood. A probe by a Florida congressman was cited.
Whatever anyone's beliefs about abortion or anti-abortion leanings, it is important to remember the primary objective of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Finding a cure for breast cancer is an objective that should be on every woman's mind.
