Koloa Kaua'i Rums are award-winning spirits which are distilled near the town of Kalaheo on the Garden Isle in Kaua'i, Hawaii. This is where the pure water and raw crystal sugar are from, which go into the rums. They are twice distilled in single batches, using a 1210-gallon, hammered by hand, vintage copper pot still with a copper column and condenser.
The Koloa Kaua'i Rum Company produced its first batch of premium Hawaiian Rum in September of 2009, which is also when the Tasting Room & Company Store at Kilohana Plantation were opened.
We have tried two of the five tantalizing flavors. We tried the coconut and the spice rums.
Koloa Kaua'i Coconut Rum (80 proof)
The rum is completely clear and an initial nosing manifests richly with coconut and a mordant strength.
How will the two meld? We wondered.
Beautifully! All we needed was a glass of ice and some milk (one to one).
Koloa Kaua'i Spice Rum (88 proof)
We are unable to discern any particular spices, but, here again. The spice rum is very smooth and has a sweet finish. We sampled neat. However, this would be an excellent spirit for mixing.
