UDATE: The Chicago Tribune reported Saturday that the injured officer was treated and released from Bolingbrook Adventist Hospital.

As previously reported, the Black Friday 2013 shooting a Kohl’s department store in suburban Chicago has resulted in the arrests of two suspects.

Suspect Gerald Chamberlain was charged with theft and Robert Russell is also being charged with theft along with charges of attempted murder, and obstructing an officer in connection with the Kohl’s shooting case.

The 52-year-old driver of the getaway car alleged getaway car is hospitalized.

Romeoville, Illinois, police say that one of their officers shot a shoplifting suspect and a second cop was injured late Thanksgiving night when they tried to prevent a man from shoplifting at the suburban Chicago department store.

Police said they got the call from the Kohl’s Romeoville store a little after 10 p.m. about shoplifters in the store.. When officers arrived, they spotted a man running out the front door of the store. Romeoville cops ran after the man in the parking lot but he jumped into a car, police said.

Officer dragged, cops started shooting

One of the police officers jumped in the suspect’s car. The first suspect closed the door on the cop’s arm and the officer was dragged as he was partially in the car. Officers say they ordered the driver several times to stop but he kept going and that’s when they opened fire. Three to four shots were fired at the car.

"We then were able to arrest the driver and the passenger and arrested the third subject, who was still inside the store," Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey told reporters.

Witnesses said a shooting at Kohl’s on Black Friday was the last thing they expected

"Definitely not something I expected tonight. [I was] just doing some light shopping, trying to get in the Black Friday spirit, buy a few things. A little shaken up, not bad or anything. I was within five feet of everything happening. It was very surreal," witness Phil Koster told Chicago's ABC7.

The suspect driver of the getaway car is not charged yet because of his hospitalization but he is expected to survive.

The Chicago Tribune reports that both charged men had long criminal records.

Russell had a previous arrest on his record for obstructing a peace officer in 2009. He was also sent to prison on theft and drug charges in 2002.

Chamberlain was sent to prison in 2008 for resisting a peace officer or correctional employee. A year later, in 2009, he was sent to jail again. That time on a cocaine drug charge. Chamberlain is now awaiting trial on a felony drug charge.

Kohl's stores issued the following statement following the Black Friday shooting

"A police investigation is under way into this matter. We are cooperating with the authorities leading the investigation and are referring all media inquiries to police."
