Koh Tao is a popular island in Thailand, which is part of the Suratthani Archipelago located on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand. The island measures 21 square kilometers. Administratively, Koh Tao forms a Tambon within the Koh Phan Ngan district of the Surat Thani Province. Before we discuss how to get to Koh Tao from Koh Samui, it’s important to discuss why anyone would want to visit Koh Tao in the first place.
Koh Tao attractions
Koh Tao has very many attractions that attract tourists from all over the world. Some of the most notable attractions include; magnificent beaches, world-class accommodation, magnificent scenery, i.e. the Koh Nang Yuan View Point, the Yaai Mae & Taa Toa spirit rocks and rich history i.e. the Koh Tao temple. These attractions among many others make Koh Tao one of the most popular islands in Thailand for diving, snorkeling, backpacking, sightseeing and luxury beach holidays.
Koh Samui attractions
Koh Samui is popularly known as Samui also has its fair share of attractions which is why most tourists visiting Koh Tao also visit Koh Samui. Some of the most notable attractions in Koh Samui include; the rich history, i.e. the big Buddha, secret Buddha garden, the Mummified Monk and the Wat Plai Laem. Koh Tao also has magnificent scenery, i.e. the Namuang waterfall and magnificent beaches i.e. the Baan Taling Ngam. Events like the Samui tiger show also attract many tourists.
Ferry and boat transport is the most popular modes of transport from Koh Samui to Koh Tao. It’s important to note that there are many ferry and boat companies operating on this route. Our focus will however be on the most popular boat, ferries and ferry companies, i.e. the Lomprayah, Phangan cruises, Seatran Discovery Ferry Company, the Songserm Express Boat and cargo boats.
Depending on your tastes and preferences, you can choose any boat or ferry company to travel with from Koh Samui to Koh Tao. It’s important to note that most ferries operating this route offer similar services. There are however differences in speed, comfort, capacity and time schedules.
For instance, the Lomprayah ferry is the perfect ferry for you if you want to travel from Samui to Koh Tao in record time because the ferry is a high speed ferry. It takes the Lomprayah ferry one hour and forty-five minutes to travel from Samui to Koh Tao. The same journey takes regular ferries two hours or more.
The ferry is also ideal for you if you want to reach Koh Tao early. This can be attributed to the fact that the ferry is the first to depart Koh Samui for Koh Tao i.e. 8.00 AM. The Seatran Discovery Ferry also leaves Koh Samui at 8.00AM. The ferry reaches Koh Tao at 10.00 AM.
The Phangan ferry departs Koh Samui at noon and arrives at Koh Tao at 2.00 PM. The Songserm Express boat leaves Koh Samui at 9.00 AM and 11.00 AM in the morning, arriving at 11.30 AM and 2.30 PM respectively. As the name suggests, the boats are ideal for express travel i.e. if you want to travel non-stop. It is however important to note that the boats aren’t as comfortable as ferries. Cargo boats from Koh Samui to Koh Tao travel occasionally i.e. a few times a week. The boats depart Koh Samui at 9.30 PM and arrive at 2.30 PM.
