On Tuesday, 4 out of 7 school board seats are up for grabs in Douglas County, Co., and the Koch Brothers are using their money to try to turn the election against supporters of teachers unions.
The Koch brothers Super PAC, Americans for Prosperity has funneled more than $350,000 into the school board race so far.
According to Politico, “The conservatives who control the board have neutered the teachers union, prodded neighborhood elementary schools to compete with one another for market share, directed tax money to pay for religious education and imposed a novel pay scale that values teachers by their subjects, so a young man teaching algebra to eighth graders can make $20,000 a year more than a colleague teaching world history down the hall.”
The Koch’s have made no secret of the fact that they would like to see an end to all public unions in America. In 2011, they were instrumental in Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s successful union busting efforts that resulted in the loss of collective bargaining rights for public unions.
For the Koch’s it’s all about the bottom line. The less money and benefits Koch Industries have to pay workers, the more profits they make.
As recently as July 2013, Charles Koch suggested that the minimum wage in the US should be eliminated so employers could pay workers a little as they wanted.
