Top news here in San Francisco is that the wife of Kobe Bryant, Vanessa Bryant, just filed for divorce from her husband, Los Angeles Lakers Guard, Kobe Bryant.

"Sad news indeed on the divorce of Kobe and Vanessa Bryant," says San Francisco resident, Ailsa Donald

The divorce papers for the couple were filed in a court in Santa Ana court in Orange County Friday.

Vanessa Bryant cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce, says ABC 7 News in San Francisco.

Vanessa Bryant signed the divorce papers on December 1st while Kobe Bryant signed his reply on December 7th and it was filed this Friday, says ABC 7 News.

A statement was released asking for privacy for the couple at this time of year.

It said: "The Bryants have resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately with the assistance of counsel and a Judgment dissolving their marital status will be entered in 2012."

The statement also announced a request from Kobe and Vanessa Bryant: "that in the interest of our young children and in light of the upcoming holiday season the public respect our privacy during this difficult time."

Kobe and Vanessa Bryant were married for 10 years and are parents to two girls, aged 8 and 5.

Vanessa Bryant has asked for joint legal and physical custody of their two girls.

According to, the couple met back in 1999 when Vanessa, who was then just 17, was cast to appear in a music video. The two married in 2001.
