Visitors and locals have something to be excited about again this year. The City of Knoxville has announced the Market Square Mall concert series for 2014. The downtown area around Gay Street, Krutch Park and Market Square Mall is known throughout the City of Knoxville for fun events. Free concerts give people another good reason to enjoy an evening out in downtown Knoxville.
The concerts are free and family friendly. Performances kicked off on May 1, 2014 with a free concert by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. The season ends on August 25 with Jazz by Marble City 5.
Concerts are on Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday nights the free concerts are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parking is free after 6 p.m. in city-owned parking garages.
My favorite place to park for Market Square Mall concerts in Knoxville is the Locust Street Garage. It is just up the hill from the mall. Another option may be to park in the parking lot behind Regal Cinema. It is across Gay Street from Krutch Park but is a nice option for anyone who wants to shop on Gay Street and then take in a concert.
Food is only available at the concerts from the existing restaurants. Visitors should plan accordingly. I've seen people bring bottled water and snacks into the events on Market Square Mall. However; the businesses on the square seem to appreciate the patronage.
There is little seating on the mall. The public is welcome to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to the event. Check the City of Knoxville Facebook Page for information on this and other events in downtown Knoxville.
