Moving from Greensboro, North Carolina to Plainfield, Indiana hasn't been easy. When you spend your life in one place, you get use to having certain things or places at your disposal. Indianapolis is a much larger city than Greensboro which is a huge difference. It has been fun discovering the area, but a problem that this examiner has faced is finding a great farmers market. In Greensboro, the local farmers market open Saturdays year round. Although a year round farmers market has yet to be found, there are a few that fluctuate throughout the year so there is always one open.
This past Saturday was spent at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market. Although, the downtown market is very nice, the selection and pricing at the Broad Ripple market is more competitive. Placed in the Broad Ripple Magnet High School parking lot, it is a little hard to find for those who have never been before. However, it is truly worth the look as it offers fresh produce like Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, and even an Apple Pear. There are a ton of pumpkins and gourds in varying sizes and colors to chose from.
The market is from 8 am to 12 pm, which is a bit early for many of us on a Saturday, but there is delicious coffee from Hubbard and Cravens Coffee and Tea. Their iced coffee hit the spot on the muggy Saturday morning with it's hints of chocolate and cooling liquid. And don't worry about breakfast, there are plenty of prepared delicacies like Raw Gourmet Delights and 3 Days in Paris. You can also choose from fresh baked breads, organic cheeses, and tasty pastries.
If you haven't checked out Broad Ripple farmers market, you are missing out. The prices are low and the vendors are super nice and friendly. Even if a farmers market isn't your thing, you should seriously consider the benefits of shopping locally. Each vendor is local meaning super fresh products. It also means that the money you spend will stay in the state. Without your support, all small and local businesses will go out of business, meaning everything you buy will come from a corporation.
