Knowing if and when the senior cat needs vaccinations

For your new kitten, you want to do what is best for good health, nutrition along with recommended vaccinations. Getting your cat immunized can save its life. Too many felines die each year without proper preventative protection. For all your vaccination and medical needs, keep in close contact with your local Rockford-area veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home for the health of your cat.

New vaccines are always available to prevent feline leukemia, infectious peritonitis virus and other fatal diseases in the feline world. When your pet is young, your veterinarian sets up the most reliable shot regiment for the life of your healthy cat. It is always best that your cat remain as an indoor feline or it may not even survive to a senior age. If you do have a loving feline that is getting older, you may wonder what vaccinations are important on a continual basis.

If your cat has been going to the same veterinarian all its life, that doctor knows what is best for your pet. There may be some controversy as to what vaccines you should give your senior cat, including the issue of feline vaccine-associated sarcoma that develops on the vaccination site, which varies. Whether you continue with a normal vaccine regiment should depend on your cat’s overall health, living area and arrangements along with the advice of your regular doctor.

It is usually unanimous that veterinarians believe in protecting cats from the things they are most susceptible to such as leukemia and feline infection peritonitis. Cats at risk should be tested for coronavirus titer and if laws require it, they should also be immunized for rabies. If your cat has been getting the booster shots its entire life, the senior cat should continue with the distemper vaccine. If your cat is at risk for disease, you should also protect it against upper respiratory viruses. Any other vaccines should be given only as needed. Follow the recommendations of your cat’s doctor for the best health, long life and your unconditional love.
