Know before you go: Holiday airline and airport travel tips

It happened in the blink of an eye, the holiday season is here! That means this week thousands of travelers are taking to the skies to head home for the Christmas and New Years holiday. Airlines are operating less flights because of the country's current economical situation, which means fuller planes and more leeway for delays and hiccups to put a damper on your travel plans.

Before you head to the airport keep the following tips in mind to try and make your travel plans go as smoothly as possible:

  • Check your flight status: find out if your flight is running late. The snow storm on the East coast messed up the air travel system nationwide. Though it might be sunny in your departure city, realize that your aircraft MIGHT be coming from a city which is experiencing some weather issues. Remember, delays can change in an instant.
  • Pack your carry-on according to Government regulations: remember you still cannot carry liquids or gels over 3.4 fluid ounces through the security check point. Double check the TSA's website for information on how to pack your carry-on luggage so that you won't encounter any issues going through security.
  • Know your airlines luggage rules: a lot of airlines now charge for checked bags, know what to expect before you get there. Don't be caught by surprise when the agents tell you that you have to pay $50 extra to check two bags. Double check your airlines website to find fees associated with checked luggage.
  • Check in online: checking in for your flight online can save you time at the airport. Avoid the lines at curbside check-in and at the counters by printing your boarding pass from your home computer. Remember, if you're checking a bag you still have to go to a check-in counter or a designated "luggage check only" counter to ensure your bags travel with you.
  • Get to the airport early: lines will be long, especially at the security checkpoint. You're not the only person traveling this holiday season thousands of others are going with you. Keep in mind that the security check point lines will be long and may cause you to miss a flight if you don't allow enough time.
  • Plan your meals: most airlines charge for food or have none at all. You may bring food through the security checkpoint (again, double check the TSA's website for excluded items like jello), pack some! Most airlines have a limited quantity of food on-board for a high price or have none at all, don't get caught hungry!
  • Bring a credit card: most airlines are cashless. If you intend on purchasing food on-board your flight or a movie, realize that some airlines no longer accept cash. You can find more airlines specific information on your carriers website.
  • Smile: being polite will get you everywhere. It's the holiday season! Airlines are running tight schedules with stressed employees and your fellow travelers are on edge about delays, possible weather around the country and spending time with their in-laws. Smiles are contagious and make people happy, spread some cheer!

As always check with your airline prior to heading to the airport to ensure your flight is operating and isn't canceled. Schedule changes can and do happen, it's best to be informed and prepared.

Have a happy and safe holiday season. Happy Travels!
