They are more alike then different. You only need to take a class in both to see the similarities.

Yoga and knitting flow nicely together. They have a lot in common, from the meditative state you are put in, to the number of hours spent in this state. There is the rhythmic flow of movement whether forming poses or stitches. A chanting, be it om or knit 1, purl 1. When you finish a class or the project you have been working on, there is the sense of completion and renewal.

The benefit of yoga will improve your posture and reduce the stress that may build up in your shoulders, arms and hands. Between yoga and knitting you will learn to be able to leave distractions behind and have a clearer focus on the task at hand.

It is advisable to have your own yoga mat to take to class. Here is a free pattern for you to knit your own Yoga mat bag by Stephanie Mrse. This will allow you to carry your mat in an easy over the shoulder, hands free, way.

If you think yoga may not be for you, don’t dismiss it just yet. There are many types of yoga. There is even yoga for people who are unable to stand for any length of time or are in wheel chairs. This is called chair yoga. The Connecticut directory of yoga classes and teachers will help explain the different styles and traditions available.
