On April 5 Herald Scotland shared an article with surprising statistics about younger people knitting as a hobby. It simply isn't your grandmother's hobby any longer with scarves, afghans, and winter beanies. In their research, it was found that there has been a 250 percent increase in Google searches for knitting for beginners and a 150 percent increase for knitting in general.
How could knitting not be popular with the wide array of things to knit such as subversive knitting, boob beanies for nursing mother's babies, naughty knitting such as thongs and bathing suits, and all of the awesome graphs that you can apply to scarves, afghans, or hats to make them even more unique than what your granny might have knitted.
With the increase in knitting online searches, there also has been an increase in YouTube videos that show how to do specific stitches, patterns, and techniques. Yarn in general has also seen an increase in sales. All over the world, Stitch and Bitch groups have formed that allow knitters to meet and chat while knitting.
One knitter says that the reason she took up knitting was because it was something to do in the evenings after classes. She was able to give something to everyone for Christmas that she had knitted. Wearing wool items is trendy right now and knitting your own is warmer than the store bought knit sweaters and other garments that you can get.
