Spread Peace Reno, a local non-profit organization, is doing amazing work helping the homeless in our community. Every day, members of the group walk downtown along the river offering food and donated items (such as cold weather gear) to the needy. The movement is growing in leaps and bounds, with almost 2,000 people on their facebook group to date.
What can you do to help?
1. Get the word out. Join the facebook group, tell your friends, get on board.
2. Donate food. Bread, peanut butter, jelly, apples, bananas, and snack items are especially needed. Items may be dropped off at any time at the Peace House, 36 Vine Street in Reno.
3. Make a cash donation. 100% of all donations goes to the cause of feeding, clothing, and providing shelter for the local homeless. There is a link set up for cash donations on Spread Peace Reno's website.
4. Donate items. Tents, blankets, tarps, sleeping bags, first aid items, cold medicines and the like can all be used.
5. Donate winter clothing. Coats, gloves, scarves, mittens, socks, and hats will all help folks stay a little bit more comfortable this winter.
6. Make a hat to donate. Most crafters have quite a bit of yarn laying around or put away in a bin somewhere. Why not put it to good use and whip up a hat (or two or three) for Reno's homeless? A simple crocheted hat from this pattern will go a long way to keeping someone a bit warmer. Or, try this knit version. Either way, you can be sure that your work will be appreciated. Consider using thicker yarn and a larger hook or needles for an extra warm cap.
