When I order flea protection from Pet Meds, they enclose a free packet of cat nip in my order. Cat nip can also be purchased in the pet department of many stores. This cat toy is a simple way to use cat nip. It can also be used as a table decoration, without the nip, or as a baby rattle.
To make this toy you will need:
- Barbie knitting machine toy
- Orange and black yarn
- Quilt batting
- Cat nip (optional)
- Yarn needle
- Green felt
- Sewing thread and needle
To make a baby rattle, you will also need a small plastic pill bottle, duck tape, and beads or aquarium gravel.
Make a tube on the knitting machine that is about 20 to 25 rows long. Leave a six inch tail of yarn on each end of the tube. Put the yarn end in a yarn needle, and sew through each loop around the tube. Pull the yarn to close the end of the tube. Make a knot.
Put about a teaspoon or two of cat nip in the center of a 3 x 10 inch scrap of quilt batting. Roll up the strip, and insert it into the knitted tube. Weave the yarn end on the open end of the tube through each loop, and pull the yarn to close that end as before. Make a knot.
Put black yarn into the needle and embroider a pumpkin face on the tube.
Cut an irregular shape that is sort of like a Star of David from green felt. Sew the shape to the top of the pumpkin. Cut a strip that is about ½ inch by 2 inches from green felt. Roll the strip to make a stem. Sew the stem together, and then sew the end of the stem to the center of the star.
The monster pictured is made the same way as the pumpkin, but using green yarn. To make the hair, cut several pieces of black yarn that are four inches long. Fold a piece of yarn in half, and pull the bend through the top of the head with a crochet hook. Pull the cut ends through the bend to make a Lark’s Head knot. Repeat until the monster is as hairy as you prefer.
To make a baby rattle, find a small pill bottle that is made of tough, flexible plastic. Do not use a bottle that is made of rigid, clear plastic, because it will shatter into sharp spikes if it gets stepped on. If you’re not sure, step on the bottle to see if it cracks. Film canisters can also be used.
Put a few beads, beans, aquarium gravel, or another small hard object into the bottle. Tape the lid to the bottle with Duck tape or fabric tape. Do a good job of it. Wrap the bottle in quilt batting, and put it inside the toy.
