Here is an unusual pattern for a knit sweater cape shawl with sleeves. The piece is trimmed with a binding that is knit in a seed stitch pattern. After you knit the binding, crochet down each of the long sides for ease of sewing.
Directions are given for small size. Changes for Medium and Large size are in parentheses.

Row 1: (Right Side) K 1, * P 1, K 1. Repeat from * across.
Row 2: K across.
Repeat these two rows for pattern.
Being careful to keep continuity of pattern, cast on 4 sts at end of last and next 9 rows thereafter — 55 (57, 59) sts: then cast on 2 sts at end of next 12 (14, 16) rows — 79 (35, 91) sts.
Sleeve Shaping: Inc 1 st at both ends of every other row 3 times; then cast on 8 sts at end of next 12 rows. Work even on 181 (187, 193) sts until piece measures 41/2 ( 4 ¾, 5) inches, from last cast-on sts.
Sleeve and Shoulder Shaping: Bind off 6 (8, 10) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then bind off 6 sts at beginning of next 24 rows. Bind off remaining 25 (27, 29) sts.
Left Front; Starting at lower edge, cast on 5 sts.
Row 1: K 1, (P 1, K 1) twice.
Row 2; K across, casting on 2 sts at end of row (side edge),
Row 3: Work across in pattern as established, increasing 1 st in last st (8 sts).
Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows once more (11 sts)
Row 6: K across, increasing 1 st in last st.
Row 7; Repeat 3rd row (13 sts).
Front edge shaping is completed.
Working in pattern and keeping front edge even, continue to increase 1 st at side edge every other row until there are 40 (43, 46) sts.
Work even until total length is 14 inches, ending at side edge.
Sleeve Shaping: Increase 1 st at side edge every other row 3 times; then cast on 8 sts at same edge every other row 6 times -- 91 (94, 97) sts.
Neck Shaping: Keeping sleeve edge even, decrease 1 st at front edge on next row and every 4th row thereafter 12 (13, 14) times in all
AT SAME TIME when sleeve edge measures 41/2 (4 3/4, 5) inches from last cast-on sts, ending at sleeve edge, work as follows:
Sleeve and .Shoulder Shaping: Continuing decreases at neck edge as indicated, bind off 6 (8, 10) sts at beginning of next row; then bind off 6 sts at same edge every other row 11 times more; bind off remaining sts,
WORK RIGHT FRONT TO CORRESPOND, REVERSING SHAPINGS.
Binding: Starting at short end, cast on 7 sts
Row 1: K 1, * P 1, K 1. Repeat from * across.
Repeat Row 1 for Seed Stitch Pattern until binding will reach around entire outer, front and neck edges. Bind off. Work sleeve bindings the same way.
Block to measurements. Sew sleeve and shoulder seams. Work one row of sc closely across long edges of binding. Fold binding in half and sew all around outer edges. Sew sleeve bindings on sleeve edges.
