Jobs are hard to find these days so many people are finding ways to re-invent themselves. But in order to figure out what next steps to take, you first need to decide on the direction to go in, right? Well, this is where many of us get stumped.
Most are taught to base career choices on the potential for material wealth. So we forget to ask ourselves, “do my passions and talents in life compliment the field I have chosen?” Instead, many employ an evaluation system that focuses on what they should be doing instead of figuring out what they enjoy doing. If you can relate to this type of scenario, and have walked that path, or find yourself on it now, then you know how frustrating it can be. But this isn’t a journey you need to take on your own.
Chicago-native, Mindie Kniss is someone very familiar with this type of situation. Having risen from it, she is now a Conscious Life Catalyst for her Portland, OR-based company, Kniss Integrative Coaching, LLC. And a woman who loves the work she is doing. Mindie meets with corporations and individuals alike to help them become aware of the unlimited potential lying dormant, deep inside of them. But Kniss didn’t start off knowing that this was the direction she wanted her life to take.
“After college, I immediately moved home to Chicago and found a job that helped pay the rent and my student loans,” Mindie says. A move many high school and college graduates make after they receive their diplomas. And before long, Mindie watched six years of her life pass by, as she worked within the corporate world. “What changed everything was when I went to live in Nairobi, Kenya on a fellowship through the company. Having the opportunity to step back from my regular day-to-day existence gave me the chance to see things from a different viewpoint.”
Deciding to take back the reigns in her life, Kniss investigated what her true passions really were. She spent some time meditating on the topic and said, “it resulted in the certainty that I wanted to coach and write.” So Kniss began re-aligning various aspects of her life and brainstormed the brand new approach she would take. “As soon as I got back to the States, I founded my coaching practice and applied to an MFA program for creative writing.” And ever since then, Mindie says, “I’ve been on this wild adventure of entrepreneurialism.”
By allowing herself the space to explore her hidden potential, Mindie discovered that, “life turns into a great adventure when you are in harmony with the flow of the universe and realize the effects of integrating mind, body and spirit.” A philosophy shared by many great minds. One in particular, is renowned writer, lecturer and physician of mind-body medicine, Deepak Chopra. Deepak references a similar type of wisdom in his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success.
Chopra writes, “when you discover your essential nature and know who you really are, in that knowing…is the ability to fulfill any dream you have, because you are the eternal possibility, the immeasurable potential of all that was, is and will be.” And in Kniss’ practice, she prides herself on being able to help others do, just that. She knows how to, “help people remember their own greatness, and to offer them tips and skills to encourage them to step into their own power.”
One of the various approaches Mindie utilizes to encourage greatness within her clients is by teaching them about philanthropy. So after each session, five percent of the session fees are donated to charities like Kiva, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Humane Society. A move demonstrating the principle of giving and receiving, which is a practice vital to building a well-rounded life.
Regardless of where you are in your life, make it a priority to be aware of yourself and the life you choose to lead day-in and day-out. Not only will you find more suitable work this way, but you will also learn more about the person you were meant to be. So, if you are feeling a little lost these days, know that there are resources available to help. And people like Mindie Kniss who can evaluate your needs and set you on a path toward self-discovery.
