Kmart, the struggling discount retailer, is ready for an early jump start to the Black Friday holiday shopping spree. It plans to open its doors at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, making it the earliest brick and mortar retailer to kick off the shopping season. And unlike last year, when Kmart closed on Thanksgiving evening to give workers a chance to spend time with family, Kmart is going to be open for 41 consecutive hours, closing its doors at 11 p.m. on Friday.
Parent company Sears is also planning an earlier start to Black Friday, but its opening hour is more in line with that of other retailers. It will not open until 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, just in time for consumers to shake off the food hangover and head out for some blockbuster shopping deals. To recap, the store hours for each retailer are:
8 p.m. on Nov. 28 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 29
6 a.m. on Nov. 28 to 11 p.m. on Nov. 29
Sears and Kmart locations in Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico will not be open on Thanksgiving Day due to state laws. But all stores in other states will open based on the schedule above unless local laws restrict hours.
Early Black Friday shopping has been promoted by retailers as a great convenience to shoppers because it provides consumers with more shopping options. Sears and Kmart have taken this a step further by also offering free orders and shipping on out of stock items. If a product is sold out from a local store, consumers can order it and have it shipped to their homes free of charge. This is great for those shoppers who may not arrive as early as others and might not find what they need. But this early, shop-‘til-you-drop, Black Thursday concept is not popular with many who feel that Thanksgiving should be a time for family togetherness, not a day to sprint to the nearest retail store for the latest shopping bargains.
Look for Black Friday ads and specific retail deals from Kmart and Sears over the next couple of weeks.
