According to Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press on Wednesday, Canadian speed skating star Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg will not be competing at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Klassen apparently is not training presently after suffering a concussion in the summer, and told the Winnipeg Free Press that she does not have the time to be prepared for the Canadian Olympic Speed Skating Trials at Calgary's Olympic Oval scheduled from December 28-January 3.

Even though Klassen claims she is symptom free at the present time, she believes time is not on her side to get physically prepared.

Klassen was the star of the Canadian team at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino. She is the only Canadian and only female speed skater to win five medals at a single Olympic Winter Games. Among the five medals Klassen won was a gold medal in the women's 1500m. Klassen will be regarded as one of the greatest athletes in the history of Canadian sport, and it is simply unfortunate she will probably not have the opportunity to go out on her own terms.
