At least one good thing may have resulted from the government shutdown at Pennsylvania's Gettysburg Cemetery, according to Huff Post, October 1, 2013: A KKK (Klu Klux Klan) rally, scheduled for October 5th, has been canceled because of the government shutdown. The white supremacy group had taken out a special use permit for the rally at Gettysburg but had to cancel the rally when the park officials canceled all permits for special events because of the government shutdown that began on October 1, 2013 at 12 a.m.

President Obama had stated earlier that the shutdown would cause the closing of all national parks, including the Smithsonian, the Statue of Liberty and Yosemite National Park, among others:

Tourists will find every one of America's national parks and monuments, from Yosemite to the Smithsonian to the Statue of Liberty, immediately closed. And of course the small business that rely on these national treasures for their livelihoods will be out of customers and out of luck."

In Washington, D.C., a group of World War II veterans did not take the government shutdown sitting down. When told of the closure of the World War II monument to which they had travelled for many miles, the veterans stormed the Memorial to pay their respects.

It goes without saying that after defending the country in the most horrific war of the 20th Century, that this group of patriotic seniors deserved to visit the Memorial, even during a shutdown.
