A little boy’s choice of a KKK costume is causing public outrage after the Virginia boy, with complete approval from his mother, decided to dress as a member of the “Hooded Order” – the far-right white supremacist organization known as the Ku Klux Klan, reports MSN Now on Nov. 4.
Jackson Black, a 7-year-old from Craigsville, Va., followed what his mother called a “family tradition,” and donned the all-white, hooded outfit with the tell-tale red and white Klansman symbol.
“My brother has (dressed like a Klansman) when he was in Kindergarten and when he was 13,” the second grader said. When asked why he chose the controversial costume, Jackson reportedly said, “Because it was cool,” and that he first saw one in the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes.”
Mom Jessica Black sees nothing wrong with her son’s Halloween costume choice, although she seemed fully aware of the infuriation that wearing it would likely cause.
“I did tell him that if you do it, you know there's going to be people talking about you, there's going to be people saying bad things about you when you do wear it,” said Jessica Black.
Nevertheless, she allowed her young son to go forward with the contentious outfit.
Neighbors, as one might expect, were shocked when they saw the pointed-hood, miniature Klansman ring their doorbell and ask for candy.
“I just think it's really sad that a kid is being taught that. That young, because they don't know any better. You don't hear that much about it,” said neighbor Wendi Sprouse. “It's not ok, you're offending a lot of people by one little action.”
Jessica made it clear that her son’s costume reflects her beliefs.
“It's supposed to be white with white. Black with black. Man with woman and all of that. That's what the KKK stands for. The KKK every year raises money to donate to the St. Jude's,” said Jessica, who added that her family has received death threats after the pic of her son in his costume went viral on Facebook.
