New Zealander Scott Dixon, driving for the Chip Ganassi racing team, won the GoPro Indycar Grand Prix at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday, August 24. Dixon took the lead on the 83rd lap of the 85-lap race when the leading car, driven by Mike Conway for the Ed Carpenter racing team, ran out of fuel just 350 yards from the pit entrance, according to team reports.
The race took place just hours after an earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale the local area, causing injuries and property damage, resulting in some early morning traffic snarls as quake-caused cracks in roads were repaired. Though nearby cities including Napa sustained damage, the Sonoma Raceway officials reported no damage and all racing went on as scheduled.
