On Sunday, May 16, 2010 Sammy Kitwara crossed the finish line first at the ING Bay to Breakers 12k in San Francisco. Kitwara won the Bay to Breakers race for the second straight year, but his 34:15 result was only steps ahead of fellow Kenyan runner Paul Kirui. Kenyan Lineth Chepkurui bested the elite women's field by setting a Bay to Breakers 12k course and world best record in 38:07. Over 60,000 registered and non-registered runners participated in the 99th ING Bay to Breakers 12k
Sammy Kitwara battled colder temperatures and strong winds in Sunday's ING Bay to Breakers 12k, unlike in 2009 when the 23 year old Kenyan broke the 12k world record at the race by running 33:31. Paul Kirui finished the 7.46 mile race just barely behind Kitwara and even recorded the same official final time. Kitwara, however, took home the $25,000 grand prize and an additional $5,000 for being the first runner to eclipse Hayes Street Hill, the highest point of elevation on the Bay to Breakers course.
Lineth Chepkurui finished in first at the 2010 Bay to Breakers 12k after coming in a close second last year and winning in 2008. This year, she bested her fellow Kenyan team mate Emily Chebet who finished a far second in 38:42. Chepkurui bettered her own 12k world record that she set earlier this year at the she set this year at Bloomsday Race in Spokane, Washington (38:10).
The Team USA World Cross Country Championship captain Magdalena Lewy-Boulet was the first American to finish among the elite women with her time of 41:40 for seventh place. Scott Bauhs of Mammoth Lakes, California was the first elite male American to finish, taking sixth in 35:55.
