About a year ago, I noticed that my formerly sleek cat Bubba had lost her kitten waistline. Which is a polite way of saying that Bubba had become a fat cat. A trip to the vet confirmed my fears: It was time for Bubba to stop licking the vanilla ice cream bowl clean and start dieting and exercising. The diet part was easy: A prescription diet cat food and a steely resolve on my part to stop giving into those pitiful meows for a taste of crunchy bacon. But the fitness part of the equation was more difficult. I wanted something that would let me exercise while Bubba whittled her own waistline. I purrrsevered, and here are the steps to the daily exercise regime that Bubba and I have developed:
- Get a laser pointer, such as SmartyKat Loco Laser Interactive Pointer Cat Toy and Zanies Laser Beam Mouse Cat Toy. Turn on a walking for fitness DVD that will allow you to use the laser pointer while you're walking off calories in your own home. My favorites for the easy-to-follow movements and kitty-bouncing music: Leslie Sansone: Walk Away the Pounds Ultimate Collection and Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - 5 Day Slim Down - A Mile Each Morning.
- On alternate days, get Kitty moving and grooving by waving a kitty gadget such as the Cat Dancer 301 Cat Charmer Interactive Cat Toy or Da Bird Cat Catcher Cat Toy by Go Cat Feather Toys. Turn on a dance for fitness DVD so that you can get Kitty pouncing while you do the bouncing. My favorites for motivating music for you and Kitty: Dance Off the Inches: Dance It Off and Firm Up! and Rhythmica: Dance Cardio Party.
