Kitten season is almost officially open as Austin had first bottle fed baby, Alfie, in 2011.
According to the Austin Pets Alive website, Alfie was the first official resident of the ‘Bottle Baby’ nursery this year. Already, APA is seeing orphaned kittens and this is ‘unseasonably’ early.
Kitten season usually starts around March and ends in the fall. Town Lake, the city’s official shelter which partners with APA, is accustomed to receiving kittens by the box load.
The Austin Pets Alive website states, “By law, TLAC holds strays for 72 hours for their owners to find them. But animals turned in by their owners do not get that hold period. TLAC is so full that many wonderful cats, surrendered by their owners, are being immediately killed because they have no room.”
Both organizations rely heavily on foster homes to help assuage the influx of abandoned and orphaned kittens. Foster homes are always in short commodity, but there are other ways to help. website.
To get involved, foster a kitten, or find out just what else a person can do to help, visit the Austin Pets Alive website Adoptable Animals page to find kittens and where they can be visited.
Help is always welcome and always appreciated.
