Information about the leading North American Thoroughbred sire, by earnings for 2013, has been released on Dec. 31. In a close race between several horses, Kitten’s Joy of Ramsey Farm has nailed the title of top sire in North America.
Based on the General Sire List by Bloodhorse.com, runners sired by Kitten’s Joy earned $11,320,523. This figure beat out Speightstown by a small margin of $89,342 who came in with earnings of $11,231,181.
A number of statistics for Kitten’s Joy and Speightstown had them neck and neck. Speightstown might have pulled ahead on the last day of 2013 if several of his horses had not scratched. But the horses did scratch and Kitten’s Joy pulled ahead. Time simply ran out and, at the cutoff, it was Kitten’s Joy ahead.
Other circumstances involving their runners might have placed the sires mere hundreds of dollars apart and my source, the Paulick Report, states the various scenarios so well.
Each sire has 257 racehorses on the tracks. Speightstown produced 153 winners while Kitten’s Joy produced only 133. However, Kitten’s Joy had one more stakes winner and graded stakes winner. This makes for some wickedly good stats.
The top horse going for Kitten’s Joy is Big Blue Kitten who has two Grade I races under the saddle. Speightstown has Reynaldothewizard, winner of the $2 million G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen.
The 2014 stud fee for Kitten’s Joy at Ramsey Farm is $100,000. The fee for Speightstown’s at WinStar is $80,000 for 2014.
The three sires that round out the top five sires are Giant’s Causeway, Malibu Moon, and War Front.
