Kittens are born in cycles throughout the year commonly known as kitten season. This "season" mainly happens between spring and early fall, depending on the location and climate. Each female kitten born can itself go into heat beginning at four months of age, and if living as a stray or feral, the cycle of unwanted animals continues over and over again.
Last year, in Virginia, one rescue had an extremely busy kitten season and as a result decided to throw a Kitten Purrlooza this weekend to present these wonderful furry babies to the public, as well as their regular residences, in the hope of finding homes.
King Street Cats in Alexandria, Virginia is a no-kill rescue and that means that frequent adoptions are important to make space for the many more in need. Currently their two room rescue is full of wonderful cats and kittens all waiting for homes. Some have been at the rescue for years, others only a short time. Among the crowd is Winkie the Tortie who is blind in one eye and Highway who was found in the middle of Seminary Rd in rush hour. There are also others such Barney the famous toilet-flushing cat and his sister. Tully, the older cat, that was recently found near Ft Belvoir is very sweet in spite of appearing to have had very difficult life, Anika who thinks sitting in a lap is the best thing ever and many more.
The kittens in this weekend's Purrlooza also included furry friends of all colors and personalities, some of which are currently in foster homes, but made the trip back in the hope of finding that permanent home. Some were sleeping in pairs in their cages, others playing among the visitors. Sammy the black kitten was happily giving head-butts to anyone who would get close enough and China the Tortie was thrilled to be carried upside down like a baby. Then, there was Charisma who took the opportunity to sit on warm shoulders and show off her balancing skills.
Happily, the weekend resulted in several potential adoptions and lots of cuddling and loving for the cats that are left. You can see all the other events and work being done by King St Cats on their website. Maybe a few other lucky people will find a new friend as well.
