It is possible to cook well with very few implements, but it’s not easy. Most of the gadgets below are not absolutely necessary, but once they’ve been used it would be hard to go back to the old method.
Pictures of each item below are in the slide show attached to this article. Most are available at the grocery store, though others may not be. Discount stores like Wal*mart and specialty stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond are likely to have the rest.
Clamp: When using a metal bowl as a double boiler, the problem of keeping the bowl steady and not dumping the contents all over the counter, the stove and the cook is a clamp. It can also be used when making risotto or other dishes that require a lot of stirring. Look for this at Bed, Bath and Beyond
Clamp on spoon holder: This is a “mess preventer.” It can also be useful when multiple dishes are being prepared at the same time. The wooden spoon or other implement can be inserted and removed easily, without dripping or confusing which spoon goes to which pan. Bought at the Simi Valley Bed, Bath and Beyond
Finger grip peeler: This can prevent many peeler related accidents. It also helps when speed is needed. Bought at the Simi Valley Bed, Bath and Beyond
Garlic press: Working with fresh garlic is not an easy task. After it’s peeled, it is very sticky. The relatively small size of the cloves is another issue. That’s one of the reasons jars of “preminced” garlic are sold at the store. However, this little device can help. Once the garlic has gone through the press, it’s ready to use…no knife needed. Can be found in the grocery store.
