The Thunder struck first on a 2-yard rush by Darron Thomas. A few possessions later, Portland quarterback Kyle Rowley connected with Jamar Howard on an 11-yard pass. The good news for Los Angeles was that the point after was no good. The only problem was that Portland, was not finished and took an early lead 16-0. However, Los Angeles was able to put some points on the board before the end of the quarter on a 5-yard pass from Aaron Garcia to Raymond Radway. It's a fantastic point to point out that Garcia was back as the starting quarterback position after missing last weeks game.
A completed pass from Rowley to McNeil for the touchdown would open up the second quarter. Then, on back-to-back touchdowns, Los Angeles was back in the game. Whatever was said by Head Coach Bob McMillen worked. The first score came on a 20-yard pass from Garcia to Donovan Morgan and the second, Garcia connected with Samora Goodson on a 10-yard pass. Both Kenny Spencer's kicks were good. With just 51 seconds left in the half Ramirez puts in a 29-yard field goal to finish out the quarter (21-23) Portland lead.
An 18-yard field goal by Spencer was the only score in the third quarter. But Portland came out firing in the fourth with three consecutive touchdowns. First, Garcia was sacked for a loss of 5-yards and Bryce Peila recovered a forced fumble for a touchdown. The second score came on a 22-yard pass from Rowley to McNeil and the third, another connection from Rowley to McNeil. Ramirez's kicks are good putting the score at 24-44 with 1:54 left in the game. But the Los Angeles were not going down without a fight. Morgan pulled down a 46-yard touchdown pass from Garcia , bringing the final score to 31-44.
Now, we have some math to do as this weeks loss for Los Angeles is putting them in a sticky situation regarding playoffs. Los Angeles is now two games behind and need to win out against San Antonio and Jacksonville. But, Portland has to loss and if they loss, Los Angeles goes into the playoffs.
Next week Los Angeles hosts the San Antonio Talons for "NET10 Wireless Arena Football Saturday" on Saturday, July 19 at 7 p.m. (PDT) on CBS Sports Network
