The Eccelstone community was saddened in January, 2014 by the loss of 11 year old, Jana Schmitz, one of its young athletes to cancer.

Schmitz was active in swimming, diving, and synchronized teams at the local pool in Kirkland.

The 1st annual Jana Schmitz Memorial Swim-a-Thon was held on Wednesday August 19 to benefit The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

A total of 4559 lengths of the pool were swum by the 60 swimmers who took part, which spanned three hours. Participants were sponsored by the lap or flat rate.

The Jana Schmitz Spirit Award was inaugurated during the evening banquet. It will be rewarded to a child who embodies Jana’s qualities of friendliness, happiness, enthusiastic, and team player. Josh Janna was the first recipient to win it.

“We raised $3,610.92 which culminated an awesome week,” Swim-A-Thon coordinator, Sheila Dunwoodie told The Suburban.
