Kirkland wants a dog park!!
The city of Kirkland does not yet have an off-leash dog park, but they are working on it. Taxpaying dog owners, as well as non-dog owners, want a local dog park where dogs can lawfully be off leash.
Kirkland Off Leash Dog Group (KDOG) is a non-profit organization created by a group of Kirkland residents who want safe off-leash areas within Kirkland where they can let dogs run. An off-leash dog area would provide the community with a local venue where both people and their dogs could enjoy socializing with one another.
The love people share for their dogs reaches beyond economic and social barriers, and a dog park would help foster a sense of community that Kirkland already enjoys.
Dog parks are being established all over the country. They offer a wealth of benefits to dogs, dog owners and the community as a whole. They provide an outlet for dog owners to socialize and to meet other people with common interests. Park users also benefit from the opportunity to ask questions of other owners and find solutions to problems they might be having with their dog.
Puppies and adult dogs need room to run, and an enclosed play area would prevent them and others from dangers, such as oncoming cars. In addition, dogs who are accustomed to playing with animals and people other than their owners would be more likely to socialize and react well toward strangers.
The actual sites for a dog park will be determined by the Parks Department. Volunteers would help run a local dog park with the city of Kirkland as their partner. Other cities, including Seattle, have shown that volunteers can effectively help run a local dog park with the city as a partner.
The Kirkland community is in the process of trying to get a petition signed that would allow for a designated park to become dog friendly. To join in this venture and sign the online petition, go to http://www.PetitionOnline.com/guth716/petition.html.
