Allstate has partnered with College football to present the Ultimate Road Trip contest for the most diehard gridiron fans. From Tuesday October 1, through Saturday November 30, fans and interested parties have a chance to win weekly prizes by signing up at AllstateCFB.com. We sat down with the legendary Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN's College GameDay to discuss how to win the grand prize and more. Kirk’s insight on the game of college football was greatly appreciated.
With takes on the first month of the college football season, Kirk Herbstreit talks about everything from Johnny Manziel's Heisman chances, to visiting Oregon on a Saturday morning during the season. Kirk takes great pride in displaying tangible knowledge about the game of football. That alone should be reason enough for football fans to want a trip to watch the Sugar Bowl.
William: Can you tell us about your work with All State and the Sugar Bowl?
Kirk Herbstreit: You can go to AllStateCFB.com from now until November 30 to win Ultimate Road Trip Sweepstakes prizes. In addition, fans have a chance to win a trip to the AllState Sugar Bowl with three friends. Fans can also register everyday.
“It should be noted that the ultimate prize includes watching the 2014 Sugar Bowl with Kirk Herbstreit.”
We also talked about the Top 10 teams in nation. Even before the Ole Miss shutout win, Kirk Herbstreit was adamant about Alabama staying at number one. However, he also stated that Oregon is right up there with the best.
The former Buckeye great also reiterates how good Ohio State can become. Kirk said directly and without hesitation, “Ohio State has amazing talent” and it’s true. Under Urban Meyer, the Buckeyes have not lost a game. Ohio State will also be part of College GameDay when they visit Evanston, IL to take on Northwestern this week.
If you’re not familiar with College GameDay, the ESPN crew travels to the biggest game of the week to do the show in or around the campus. Luckily, for Herbstreit and the guys, they’ve been to some amazing places during the football season. Even when there aren’t many high profile games, they’ll produce a show that’ll capture the nation’s imagination.
William: What is your favorite campus to visit during College GameDay?
Kirk Herbstreit: Well, we visited North Dakota State last week and it was great. There are so many places to be but Oregon and the passionate fan base is lovely. The Ducks’ fans are always prepared to be as loud as any other fan base at the start of the show.
It must be worth noting that anytime Oregon hosts the Game day crew, the show starts at 6:00 a.m. local time. Autzen stadium is one of the most amazing atmospheres in the college game today.
Kirk Herbstreit also talked about sleeper teams for this season. He picked one team that had its’ greatest success in last season’s Sugar Bowl. That team is none other than the Louisville Cardinals.
Kirk Herbstreit: It’s not only about Teddy Bridgewater down in Louisville. Although I picked him as a preseason frontrunner to win the Heisman, the Louisville defense has been remarkable all season long. Still, the Cardinals are playing in the AAC and they won’t have many chances for marquee wins.
The Louisville Cardinals have only given up 27 points in four games.
Even with Teddy Bridgewater’s football prowess, Johnny Manziel is currently Kirk Herbstreit’s Heisman favorite. Yet, he says you can’t win the Heisman in the first two months.
Kirk Herbstreit: Right now, individual players can only jockey for position to win the Heisman. Someone will need to have that signature moment or high profile game in November.
Kirk also states that the media got “Johnny Manziel fatigue” before the season started. People wanted to see him fail, but he Silenced critics even in the loss to Alabama. Another reason why Johnny Manziel is the main attraction is that, fans can’t get a drink when Texas A&M has ball. They won’t go to refrigerator for a snack because they never know what he’s going to do.
Our final question of the day was sponsored by the ACC Football Alliance Facebook group.
William: Who is the best team in the ACC Coastal?
Kirk Herbstreit: Miami Hurricanes. While, they are young, the Hurricanes are very talented and they could prove to give the winner of the Atlantic a run for their money in the conference title game.
Kirk Herbstreit and his team will be at Northwestern this weekend, and don’t forget to win your chance to meet him at AllStateCFB.com. He also provides interesting fodder on twitter for his followers.
