KINKY FRIEDMAN COMES TO THE AVALON

See also

Who's Kinky Friedman and why might his Tuesday, May 10th performance at the Avalon be the most engrossing and provocative show you've seen in years?

Let's see. Kinky is: a country and rockabilly singer with hits like "Asshole from El Paso" and "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore"; a 70's legend who toured with Bob Dylan and was a musical guest on Saturday Night Live in October 1976; the only act whose performance on Austin City Limits went unaired; a man with strong opinions, having run for political office twice...the most recent of which was a losing effort for Governor of TX in 2006; a businessman who sells his own line of cigars (kinkycigars.com); an author who has written more than 25 novels; an animal welfare activist who founded his own shelter for homeless animals, and; a sought after keynote speaker, mostly in and around Texas.

Arriving on the wave of country rock following on from Gram Parsons, The Band, and the Eagles, Kinky Friedman's foray into cult fame status was as a country and western singer. His break came in 1973 thanks to Commander Cody, who contacted Vanguard Music on his behalf. His live show repertoire is mixed social commentary and songs ingrained with raucous humor ("Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in Bed", is a perfect example). His Avalon concert will undoubtedly leave smiles on audience faces, catchy country-tinged songs in their ears, and quite possibly even a handful of "Kinky for President" chants. Tickets are $30 and still available at the theater's box office (410.822.7299).

Though years have passed since the last full-on Texas Jewboys show, Kinky continues to be associated with that infamous band of his early career. On the projects list for 2011 is a Willie Nelson CD of Kinky's songs, which will be no less than the third tribute album to Kinky and his work. Meanwhile, Kinky continues to “spit out books like sunflower seeds," with a brand new deal to co-write one with old pal Billy Bob Thornton. And as we approach the middle of the political high season, guess who is the most authentic and sought after keynote speaker in Texas? Here's a hint: it's not the hair guy, and it's not the no hair guy. It's the kinky hair guy. With an understanding that all conventions and professional gatherings demand a great kickoff, Kinky brings with him the perfect blend of satire, political humor, hilarious insights into the human condition, and wicked social commentary.

Expect that much - and a cloud of cigar smoke - from a true original on the evening of May 10th.

BOILERMAKER JAZZ BAND

Thursday, May 12 - 8pm. $30

Stoltz Listening Room at the Avalon Theatre Box Office: 410.822.7299 www.avalontheatre.com www.boilermakerjazzband.com

The Boilermaker Jazz Band makes an anticipated return to one of their favorite destinations in the Avalon Theatre. Only this time around, the group moves upstairs for a very special performance in the 60-seat Stoltz Listening Room (SLR) as part of the theatre's 2nd Thursday Jazz Series.

The Pittsburgh-based band commandingly performs authentic hot jazz and swing with a wide repertoire that allows audiences to swing to a classic jazz standard; get sentimental over an old-time ballad; boogie to a hot jump tune; or get low-down with a gritty blues number.

Paul Cosentino's (clarinet & leader) impeccable taste in music and authentic tone (he plays an antique Albert system clarinet giving him a wonderfully distinctive sound) lends to the group's constantly evolving song list with both new and original tunes, giving listeners something different every time. The Avalon's booking and house manager, Suzy Moore, says that formula is one of the secrets to the band's success, and history of constantly being invited back to the venues they've played.

"Paul, Jennie Luvv and the rest of the band do such a good job of reading the audience and giving them what they want," says Moore. "We've had them here a bunch of times and it's always a great gig - but this one's a bit special because we've never had them in the SLR. It's going to be swinging' in here!"

Luvv, Boilermaker's popular vocalist, not only possesses the smooth and sultry vocal chops needed for the band's type of music, but fits the bill in the looks department as well, consistently dolled up as if she just stepped out of the roaring twenties.

“Impeccable renditions of classics... Attention to detail, delicious authenticity... Soak up the sounds ’cause there’s nothing like this around anymore.” Hits Magazine — Premiere Pick

Tickets are still available for next Thursday's 8pm performance but are expected to go quickly. Call 410.822.7299 or go to avalontheatre.com for tickets.
