San Francisco made a big (leather-bound and partially nude) impression at this year's Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
San Francisco is the home of Kink.com, the most popular site for fetish videos in the world. The folks of Kink.com let James Franco and his production crew into the building to see what it is like to be a part of Kink.com. The resulting documentary, "Kink," premiered at this years Sundance Film Festival.
I had an opportunity to sit down with Peter Acworth, the founder of Kink.com, to talk about the film. Acworth explained that although the company had been approached by film crews in the past, his trust in James led him to agree to this project, "We got a really good feeling from both James and Christina (Christina Voros, the director of the film) and so we said let's do it. And part of what they wanted was final cut, they wanted complete control over the final product. So, ultimately we were ok with that." Acworth hopes the film will clear up a few misconceptions about BDSM workers, "a lot of us have very normal lives outside of work and just happen to be kinky."
James Franco found out about the site while filming near Kink.com headquarters, "He went into our sets and watched some of our shoots taking place. So, he asked a lot of questions about the place, chatted with us and then came forward and said he wanted to do a documentary with us." Film crews descended upon the San Francisco Armory building for two weeks of filming to follow the filmmakers on their typical work day, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The film serves as a day in the life shot of Kink.com. It does not delve into the lives of the workers or attempt to explain what motivates someone to make porn their full time vocation. Although it does not develop individual stories, it does give us a peak into a world we would otherwise not have access to.
