A Kingston man was shot and killed earlier today after pointing a rifle at Gordon County deputies.
Gordon County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a private residence on Dews Pond Road near Calhoun at apprximately 3:50 p.m. concerning the report of an armed man threatening to kill his wife.
The dispatch was in response to a request from Floyd County authorities.
Upon their arrival, responding deputies spotted the man in question in a pick-up truck, which had been reported stolen.
This man, now identified as Allen Eugene Ott, 48, of 781 Flowery Branch in Kingston was approached by the deputies. Ott was armed with a large caliber rifle and ignored repeated commands to put down the weapon.
Ott then pointed his rifle at a deputy who returned fire and shot him.While suffering from the gunshot, Ott then pointed his rifle at a second deputy and was shot again.
He was removed from the scene by ambulance and pronounced dead.
"This was an unfortunate incident where an individual threatened the deputies, placing them in fear for their lives and forced them to take action" said Sheriff Mitch Ralston, “It is a reminder of the dangers in such cases that our courageous officers face every day."
The deputies involved in this event will be on paid, administrative leave until the completion of the GBI investigation, which is in keeping with standard policy and procedures."
