Kings release Aaron Brooks

The Sacramento Kings had Aaron Brooks on their radar for years, but after following up a year in China with a disappointing season back in the NBA it was time to let him go.

The Kings released Brooks, who was set to make $3.3 million this season with a player option for $3.4 million next season, today on March 1. The move leaves the roster at 13 players.

Brooks confirmed the news via Twitter:

I'd like to thank the great city of Sacramento, the Sacramento Kings organization, coaching staff and most of all the fans that supported this leg of my journey. I enjoyed my time with the Kings and wish them success in the future.

A former Most Improved Player of the Year award winner in Houston, Brooks averaged eight points and 2.3 assists per game in 46 games with the Kings, including 20 starts.

With Isaiah Thomas as the starting point guard, the move also allows more playing time for either Jimmer Fredette or new acquisition Toney Douglas.

The Kings will play the San Antonio Spurs to end their five-game road trip tonight at 5:30 p.m. PST.
