Kings Gap Environmental Education Center announced Wednesday, Feb. 26, that it will offer a “GO Teach” workshop for educators. The workshop, “Hiking 101: A Cross-Curricula Connection,” is approved by the PDE and will have six Act 48 hours available.
The “Hiking 101: A Cross-Curricula Connection” is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, from 8 am to 3:30 pm and is geared to help educators understand that hiking is more than just putting on a pair of boots and walking in the woods. Participants will learn how to enable their students to discover Penn’s Woods through an interdisciplinary set of lessons for teachers created by the PA Bureau of State Parks.
Although this workshop is for grade K-12 educators, the emphasis will be on middle school activities. Lessons for the workshop will focus on health, fitness and trip planning; map reading and identifying local trails; forest ecology as well as nature journaling. The lessons meet several Physical Education and Health standards, as well as standards for Geography, Science and Ecology and the Humanities.
