Gina Padilla, Program Coordinator at Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, announced today, March 5, that the Park will again be offering “Introduction to Orienteering.”
The orienteering program is geared toward beginners and if you’re wondering what orienteering is, here’s a brief history lesson. Originating as a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed into a popular outdoor sport that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from one point to another, on foot, in a race against the clock.
Called "the art of map and compass reading," orienteering is a fun way to exercise and build wilderness survival skills and with 16 miles of trails, Kings Gap is a prime location for this fun, family activity. On Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Kings Gap Environmental Education Center will offer the free "Introduction to Orienteering" program.
The public is invited to join members of the Susquehanna Valley Orienteering Club to discover more about the sport of orienteering. Participants will receive instruction on the basics of compass use and reading topographic maps, and run a beginners’ level orienteering course. Loaner compasses will be available and participants will need to wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The program is recommended for ages eight and older with no registration required, but an adult must accompany all children.
If you need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability, please contact the Park. With at least three days notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs. For more information, call Kings Gap at (717) 486-3799 or email kingsgapsp@pa.gov.
